“My dear engagement day. — On getting up found many telegrams & the welcome news that Marie had been safely delivered of a son & that both were going on well! All greatly pleased. Sending off & receiving telegrams. After breakfast heard that the Empress had arrived at Buckingham Palace with the Césa reéwitch, having travelled almost without stopping from the Crimea, which she left only on the 11th — Walked with Beatrice & also rode. Very fine & bright. — Writing letters to Affie & the Empress of Russia. — Drove in the afternoon with Janie E. round Glen Beg & took our tea with us. — She, the Biddulphs & the Ld Chancellor, who arrived today, dined with us. We drank Marie’s & the Baby’s healths, of whom the accounts continue good. — Janie E., read afterwards.“
