Queen Victoria’s bodice goes up for auction

A rare bodice worn by Queen Victoria is heading for auction in London. The auction photographs have an absolutely delicious photograph of the inside of the bodice. As a historical costume maker and historical interpreter i almost jump out my seat when i am given a rare glimpse of inside these absolutely special garments.

Dating from mid 1890's, the garment is a classic example of the clothing worn by Queen Victoria in her later years. The bodice itself is made out of black silk, with layers of black matte crepe and Brussels lace decorating the front panels and ends of the sleeves.

Matching lace also decorates the hem of the bodice, whilst ivory organdie sits along the edge of the collar and sleeves. Like many of Victoria’s bodices from this period, the garment is lightly boned and pleated at the back so it can be worn with a small bustle. The bodice features discrete pockets that permitted the Queen to carry personal belongings, such as her glasses and trinkets.

There is some repairs to the elbow on one sleeve and a piece of boning which is poking through its casing near the front buttons. Overall, the bodice is in fantastic condition and is almost certainly in displayable condition.
