On 14th July 1887, Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone of the Equestiran Statue of the Prince Consort, presented by the Women and Girls of the United Kingdom, on Smith's Lawn, Windsor Park.
Queen Victoria’s Journal:
"Louis, his 2 girls & Arthur, breakfasted with me at Frogmore. I walked a little afterwards, & then sat & wrote under the trees. — Resting & writing when I came home. — Again received Addresses in the Green Drawingroom after luncheon, — from the town of Windsor, the Dean & Chapter, the Military Knights, one from Reading, & one from the schools of Winchester & Rugby. Beatrice & Arthur were with me. — Took tea at Frogmore with Beatrice & Louischen, after which, drove off at 6, Beatrice & Louis with me, Arthur, Louischen, Irène, Alicky, little Daisy & Arthur, & 2 of the ladies, in other carriages, to Smith's Lawn, close to Cumberland Lodge. An Escort as well as the Equerries met me, & we went straight up to a dais, where Fritz, Lenchen, Christian, & their girls were standing. The Memorial Stone was just in front of a semi-circle of seats, filled with deputations of women from the three Kingdoms. Ly Strafford as President of the Committee of the Women's Jubilee Offering (which amounts to £80,000) after saying what the object was, gave me a trowel, with which I laid the stone in the usual manner. I then walked round with Ly Strafford, who presented Ly Arthur Gordon, & many ladies of the Committee. I expressed my thanks over & over again, & then we drove off. It was a beautiful evening. — Besides our family party, Emily Ampthill, Ct Radolinski, Ld & Ly Lathom, the Cowells, Col: Hall, Major v. Kessell, Westerweller, & Mr Sahl, dined, in the Dining room. The Band of the Coldstream Guards played during dinner"
