Queen Victoria’s Journal - The birth of Prince Henry of Prussia, 14th August 1862

“When I awoke this morning a telegram from Fritz was brought in to me, announcing Vicky’s safe confinement, with a strong big boy. Felt very thankful, but so sad not having beloved Albert to share my joy & thankfulness. Had so many telegrams to write & so many coming in. — It rained all day, but I managed to get out late for a short while in the pony chair, Lenchen walking. — At luncheon I drank with Arthur & Baby the new grandson’s health. — Saw DrRobertson after luncheon, & then DrBecker, talking with the latter of Alice’s affairs & Louis’ house. The final result is that the condition is just the same as it was last year, when after the Gd Duke’s refusal, we decided that the young people must live with us, until they found a suitable house of their own — It seemed to clear a little about 6, & I started out driving, but the rain came on so heavily again, that I had to come back. — Very good accounts of Vicky. — Bertie arrived & dined with me, reading to us afterwards out of his Journal. —“
